Weight

The ideal RV mattress is lightweight. A heavy mattress is difficult to move around, affects your vehicle’s miles per gallon, and may exceed the weight limit of the bed platform. RV-friendly mattresses weigh under 120 lbs. 

Height

Standard bedroom mattresses are 8”–14” thick. Meanwhile, the mattresses that come with RVs are usually just 5”–6” thick. Some RV bed spaces, such as slide-out compartments, can only fit very thin mattresses. However, upgrading to an 8”–12” mattress often provides significantly improved comfort without exceeding available space. 

Length and Width

Don’t assume that a standard-size mattress will fit in your RV bunk bed frame. Instead, check the owner’s manual and/or measure the space to learn the precise dimensions of your bed. 

If your bed space has standard mattress dimensions (twin, queen, etc.) then you can shop with any brand.
